10 new features of the Gopro Hero 4

Update: The Gopro Hero 4 versions have been released! Check our first review here.

For those inclined with the Gopro Hero 3+ black edition, it is now available at a great discount.

The release of the next Gopro Camera is fast approaching: rumors abounds that the Gopro Hero 4 will be released in the very next few days – Oct. 8th to be exact!

Why is it important? the lightweight GoPro camera was embraced by millions of extreme sports fans, adventurous people and tourists, both for its size and the fact that it allows you to capture great video footage at an incredible quality even in the most extreme conditions. On the other hand, even at 1/3 of the prize of a professional camera, its cinematographic abilities are almost on par, making it an equipment of choice even in the professional arena. Not to mention the abounding mounts and accessories, rendering it usable in any terrain and application.

The next version of the widely successful Gopro Hero 3+ is expected to follow on this trend, and add some cool functionality to this amazing piece of equipment, and with an even better quality than before.

Spoiler alert: the new Hero 4 will allow to record in 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 120 fps or in 720p at 240 FPS. Absolutely mind blowing specs, even comparing to top of the line professional cameras. And did we mention the built-in touch display?

So let’s dig into some of the most prominent features of the GoPro Hero 4 specs.

Two Gopro Hero 4 editions – Black  and Silver

Both flavours will sport all of the features we got used to from the Hero3 and 3+, namely

  • waterproof housing, that will allow videos to be shot in deep water at about 130 feets (40 meters).
  • The GoPro Hero 4 will also have a Wi Fi module and HDMI port for uploading and for sharing videos easily.
  • auto low-light setting
  • Importantly, both the Black and Silver Editions will be back compatible with all Hero 3 and 3+ mounts and accessories!
  • manual control over exposure, ISO, color,  and so on for both photography and videography – While 4K is exciting, finally getting manual controls over exposure is an enormous value-add for the experienced photo-tweakers among us.
  • Finally, we expect for both flavors to keep the 12MP that worked well with the 4096*2160 screen resolution of 4K 17:9, or 4000*3000 in photo mode.

Incidentally, we will not have both LCD touch-screen and 4K@60fps in the same device. Et pour cause!

The Gopro Hero 4 Silver edition will feature the same A7 chip as the current Hero 3+, albeit in a fully new housing and with the functionality upgrades allowed by the touchscreen.

The frame-rate of the Gopro Hero 4 Silver yet have nothing to shame as summarized below, and the touchscreen makes it noteworthy on its own merit. It is expected to replace the Gopro Hero 3+ which is already out of stock, and depending on your application (and its price point) you might prefer it over the Black edition, especially if you want to use the touchscreen for manual control over settings.

The Ambarella A9 4K chip

the GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition will be sporting the brand new, shiny Ambarella A999 Chip. This exciting chip is capable of reliably capturing 4k at 30fps imagery.

What does it mean at a glace:

  • Ultra HD 4K H.264 Encoder – Yes, the GoPro will be able to capture 4K videos, at the rate of 30 frames per second.
  • 1080p120 for action videography – now we can start some serious slow-motion pictures there!
  • Advanced Imaging: Multi-exposure HDR and WDR tone mapping. High dynamic range and wide dynamic range tone the images significantly better, and we can sincerely hope to see them in action at 1080p.
  • 700Mpixels/s oversampling performance
  • Electronic image stabilization (EIS) – it is not clear if Gopro will make use of it, but the combination with 4K should truly help in image stabilisation.

The GoPro Hero 4 will allow users to do just this but in even better quality then before. F-Stopper claims that the new Hero 4 will allow to record in 4K at 1080p at 120 FPS or in 720p at 240 FPS. These specs are absolutely mind blowing, even comparing it to some top of the line professional cameras. Here is the full line of the GoPro Hero 4 specs

  • 4K (3840 × 2160) Ultra HD H.264 Encoder
  • 1080p at 120 FPS and 720p at 240 FPS for action videography
  • 700Mpixels/s oversampling performance
  • Multi-exposure HDR and WDR tone mapping
  • Electronic image stabilization (EIS)
  • Improved MCTF with advanced sharpening
  • Remote viewfinder, playback
  • Upload pictures and video to social media

The only current concern of the new GoPro hero 4 is the battery life it will have, previous models have been getting some hate for the little battery life it has. As of now we don’t know yet when the new GoPro Hero 4 is coming, but its expected to be revealed Summer 2014. Here is a video showing the GoPro Hero 3 in action

one caveat especially, it is not clear if we will have the option of 720p at the rate of 240 frames per second. Com’on, make it happen!

Nevertheless with 4K at the high rate of 30fps should provide astonishing results, and we are eager to see the first downconverted results on Youtube (despite the somewhat crude compression tech used by youtube).
