gopro 3D system in use

One of GoPro’s more fun accessories to use is the 3D HERO system. The 3D HERO System combines two GoPro cameras into one housing  to record synchronized 2D and 3D videos and photos.

gopro 3D system

What is the fuss about?

The Gopro 3D System is actually quite simple, but it yield spectacular results. The sturdy housing allows you to place two cameras side by side. Note that one camera is rotated upside down versus the other one. Included with the housing is a special syncing cable connecting the two cameras to ensure both of them have start recording at the same time. If both are on, they will record at the push of a single button, much in the way a master-slave configuration works.

The housing is waterproof, rated up to 180 feet (60m) deep.
Refreshingly, the system comes with a host of accessories:  3 Pairs of 3D Anaglyph Glasses, a helmet front mount, sync cable, and various mounting hardware. So you shouldn’t need further accessories to operate the setup.

3D gopro system in action

Sync cable has a USB port to power and transfer photos for both cameras, and the Skeleton backdoor allows connection to camera without removing the cameras. All controls are from the main (right) camera and set power on/off, settings, shutter of the left camera. It also syncs the settings in order to avoid mismatches between the camera. The flat lens allows for clear underwater photos. WiFi control via app also works to control the cameras, although you can only see the photo/video from the right camera in the app.

Each devide produces MPEG4, that are then post-processed in  CineForm Studio (The GoPro Studio software). This very intuitive software is actually available for free at gopro.com.

Spectacular shots

The results speak for themselves (hahem, you might need the 3D glasses to actually get the most of the movies, sorry for that) :

Now, next time you make sky acrobatics, don’t forget your 3D system

Notes:

- The Gopro 3D system is slightly different for HERO 1/2 versus the HERO 3+, be sure to choose the right 3D system for your cameras (Note that it only works with the Hero3+ Black, not the silver or white) .

- the widest setting is a little too wide for most 3D shots, but is really good if your subject is about 3′ away.

- make sure you are using the same firmware for both cameras.

 Gopro 3D System – Action!

For action enthusiasts this 3D gopro system is truly a unique shooting solution.

- You can achieve great quality results for a much lower price point than any other type of 3D cameras,

- the straightforward and  conversion software of GoPro does not require much technical expertise and is very easy to use. By the way, did I already mentioned the software is free?

- You won’t need any special screen or 3D TVs to watch the 3D videos or photos you make. Any regular TV or computer screen will do the tric, as long as you have the 3D Anaglyph Glasses included in the pack!

There is a host of reasons why Gopro is such an amazing camera. the $60 Gopro Wifi remote is one of them. Let’s see here why it is such an essential accessory to your Gopro arsenal.

Recognize these selfie images, where your gopro camera is on a pole, but to take the picture you need to stick your hand out, ending up taking up 50% of the photo space?

gopro-selfie-arm

imagine a selfie without fumbling with your gopro buttons…are you getting a gopro wifi remote already?

But, what if you had just a small wireless remote that could trigger the camera? wouldn’t it be great?

gopro selfie with pole and gopro wifi remote

just point your pole, and click your remote…what a view!

The Gopro wifi remote was designed exactly for that. It controls your HERO3 or HERO3+ Edition camera remotely featuring wifi capability, so you can wirelessly access your camera’s settings, power it on or off and start or stop recording from up to 600′ for flexible use. We are now opening a world of new shooting options:

- With such an adequate remote distance, you can now setup your camera in remote areas to catch as much view as possible, i.e. in hunting or nature shooting

- you can place your device outside of your car for example, and shoot some amazing panoramas

- you can observe the strain on your tires in a tight curve, attaching your gopro to the outside of the car using i.e. suction cups.

The Wi-Fi remote isn’t much larger than a wristwatch and mirrors the shutter and select buttons of the GoPro camera. The lcd screen shows you if it is recording and shows the status of the recording. No more fumbling and hoping the cam is still on.

This little black plastic module measures about 2.5 inches wide by 1.4 inches tall by 0.75 inch deep and connects wirelessly to the Gopro camera  assume its control

gopro remote

The face of the unit features two rubber buttons that mirror the functions of the GoPro camera’s Shutter and Mode/Power buttons. So once connected to the camera, you can power the camera on and off, choose between its various shooting modes, head into the camera’s menu to adjust the various settings of those modes, and start and stop recording video or capturing still photos.

Next to those rubber buttons is a monochrome LCD that is identical to the one on the front of the GoPro camera and mirrors the data displayed there. (shooting mode, monitor the battery level of the camera,  amount of available storage space…).

The Wi-Fi remote’s sealed construction makes it waterproof down to 10 feet of submersion. A pair of slots on the back of the device accommodate an included wrist strap, making the device wearable. Users can also dangle the remote from a key-ring-like attachment ring located at one end of the device.

gopro remote 1

gopro wifi remote 2

some hints and tips though:

- The device itself works extremely well, but the battery life is horrible. It will outlast a single GoPro camera battery, but not two. So you have to remember to recharge your remote together with the gopro camera itself.

- With the remote you can now turn the camera on and off very easily, even when the camera is cumbersomely mounted (i.e. on your head, or up-side-down at the front of your bike). Your camera battery will now last a lot longer !

- with the remote pole, you integrate the remote to the bottom of the pole, enabling single hand operation and maneuvring of your camera.

Once you have a  Gopro hero camera in hand, one of the first things you will want to do, is to get it airborne remotely for some cool shooting. However, until now most flying machines are either difficult to fly or completely out of budget, or both (think radio-controlled airplanes or helicopters…).

The DJI Phantom quadcopter is truly an amazing piece of equipment, designed to fulfill this exact dream:

Cheaply and easily fly your gopro camera!

this quadcopter is inherently stable, allowing novices to expertly fly the machine, even without any training.  At less than $ 500, this lightweght, solid and sleek device is also quite cheap.

Mounting a GoPro camera allows you to capture footage from the air as well as convert your Phantom into an full first-person view (FPV) aerial solution. They were designed each with the other in mind, and we have seen some quite breathtaking shots made possible by this mesmerizing combination.   The Gopro Hero camera and the DJI phantom quadcopter are therefore bound to be together, and the phantom becomes a mandatory element to your Gopro arsenal.

Here is an example of the capacities of a Gopro camera attached to a phantom quadcopter, flying at different altitudes, including water landing, and submarine travel.

Makes you salivate of the endless possibilities for shooting. Enjoy!

To make the full of your gopro, some tips will help you a great deal:

  • Never use the built-in Wi-Fi on the GoPro while it is attached to the Phantom 2. The GoPro’s Wi-Fi operates on the same frequency as the transmitter and receiver system (remote control) used to operate the quadcopter and harmful interference may result.
  • image stability and gelo is going to be one of your major concerns once you get used to shoot. Always use an anti-jello isolator. More on this topic below. Do not use cheap neophrene and scotch tape. It will work, but for about 5 minutes until the whole thing comes crashing down…
  • don’t forget to use waterproof cover. Even if the added weight limits the flying range, the risk of your camera finding it’s way underwater is not negligible, and you will want to recover it!
  • bring a pair of batteries, both for your gopro hero camera and for your DJI phantom. You will want enough play time…

gopro-and-phantom-1

One thing you might also want to consider, is to purchase a hard case for your phantom,  for safe and easy transport. Some  DJI phantom kits come fully featured, and turn out generally to be a great value pack. They do not include however any anti-vibration mount, so you will need to add this.

One special add-on you might want to add, is a brushless gimbal. This is a 2 or 3-axis camera stabilization device that supports tilting, canting, and panning of the camera in relation to the flying machine. It enables lateral and angular shots, and not only frontal shot of the camera. Most already includes anti-vibration gummies, so that the overall cost stays reasonable. Electronically, the gimbal is designed to operate plug and play with the Phantom, and doesn’t requires any added controller.

gopro on phantom with brushless tymbal

gopro phantom brushless tymbal

All in all, for well below $1000 this is a great solution for fly-and-shoot, easily surpassing any other option/kit we have seen. Do not expect to shoot full-length action movies and car chases with it, but this little marvel can really surprise. Just see here some amazing examples:

Next on our “Gopro Essentials” series, let’s look at a suction cup mount.
And not any simple mount, but the very special CineSquid Suction Cup Camera Mount.

Cinetics-CineSquid-Suction-Cup-Camera-Mount-for-GorillaPod-Focus-Tripod-0-1

Made by cinetics (the company that brought us the cineskates and some pretty amazing videos), the $99 CineSquid is a super strong and versatile suction cup camera mount system. It allows to capture previously unthinkable shots by attaching the gopro camera to any smooth surfaces, from any angle. Truly a suction cup tripod system fit for Spider-man! gopro with cinetics suction cups and gorillapod on mitsubishi evo

gopro with cinetics suction cups and gorillapod on mitsubishi evo

By design the Cinesquid suction cup attaches to the $99 flexible GorillaPod Focus tripod with Ballhead X which provides a reliable and flexible support. This tabletop tripod (only 11.4 29mm tall) features incredibly flexible legs made up of more than two dozen leg joints, and can wrap around a wide variety of supports to position your Gopro camera.

A unique feature of this tripod is its universal x-shaped mounting plate which connects to your Gopro Hero and easily slides on and off the ballhead.

It is equipped with durable adjustment knobs which allow you to rotate your camera smoothly with full 360° panning and up to 90° tilts. Additionally, its durable aluminum construction has an all-black finish which minimizes reflectivity and gives it a professional look.GorillaPod-Focus-with-Ballhead-X-and-Cinetics-CineSquid-Bundle-0The system uses suction cup technology to create a portable tripod system which can attach just about anywhere including uneven car surfaces, motorcycles and any other multi-level surface. The Cinesquid suction cups are designed to hold strong and not lose their grip.

cinesquid cupGranted, at almost $200 the overall setup is no cheap (is found a bit cheaper as a combo). But with its great build quality, and unbelievable sucking ability, it brings a major element when shooting in harsh/vibrating/fast moving environments: Peace of mind that your Gopro camera will be there at the end of the Journey.

Some words of warning: you have to figure out exactly how to place the legs through trial and error. Even though it won’t fall off the hood or window, if the legs are misaligned, the camera will drop down and you’ll lose your shot. Set up the legs right and it’ll work forever. These cinesquids will suck till rapture if needed!

The setup becomes then truly ideal For:

  • High-speed chase or automobile cruising scenes
  • Aerial views from the belly of an airplane up to 200mph
  • Scenic or landscape shots from a boat, train or any moving vehicle
  • Time-lapse video with a rock-solid connection to any smooth surface

Let’s have a first gopro test on the Mitsubishi Evo X shown above, featuring the use of a Gopro Hero on a GorillaPod with CineSquid, and 360 rotation Radian:

To give you a sense of the stability of this beast, let’s check it out in wind, rain and snow, on this last season’s ride of a Vespa Gts300:

And if there is any need to convince you more, even Batman uses it to record his heroic adventures in the City:

So, have you got yours yet?

We’ve seen the GoPro camera used in many things over the last few years – but this is something else!

Love bringing your GoPro everywhere but hate forgetting it places? A young lady who simply goes by the name of Go-Pro-positioned-so-you-can-see-my-boobs-while-I-workout has thought of a brilliant solution:

to use Gopro at the gym, strap a camera to you forehead while you works out.

Gopro-boobs-gym4

Not the usual way, mind you: in order not to lose sight of it ever again, she pointed it at her face…and boobs!
The result is both captivating and a little creepy – but in a very sexy way…

We’re not complaining too much though. Ho, and stay out until the end, there’s a surprise for you there!

Edit: the video, surely the result of Thefappening event, have been removed. Fear not though, here some photographic reminders.

If there is a single accessory which every Gopro user should have it is really the bacpac floaty backdoor.

Until now, if your Gopro somehow became detached from your surfboard, kayak, water skis, etc., you could expect it to sink. But with this $10 add-on your camera will float — a simple but much needed upgrade!

This easy-to-spot flotation attaches directly to the housing backdoor to keep your GoPro afloat. Great for snorkeling, surfing, wakeboarding or other deep-water activity, it includes two Adhesive Anchors and Camera Tethers for added security in extreme conditions.

The backdoor accessory is a sponge that sticks onto the back of the GoPro case with a strong 3M adhesive. It is blaze orange and made easy to spot in the water. The float works, and being bright, high visible orange makes it pretty easy to spot.

gopro-floaty-backdoor

There are several 3rd party floats for the GoPro cameras, this one has three specific advantages:

  1.  It comes with a spare waterproof backdoor. That means that once you install the floaty back, you aren’t stuck with a float always being on your original waterproof backdoor from there on out. This is important since it allows usage of the waterproof backdoor in other settings without the bulky look of the float sticking out when mounting the camera on e.g. a helmet.
  2. It’s a high-visibility orange. the orange is a cool color, and visible in a much greater variety of situations than other, paler colors.
  3. finally, the Gopro-signed quality of the equipment, ensures both a better fit to the expeted usage, but also greater customer service in case should anything happen.

If you’re going to be heading out into a body of water with your GoPro, do yourself a favor and spend the $10 to protect your $200 to $400 investment. You’ll regret needing the insurance of a float and not having it a lot more than having the insurance and not needing it.

One word of caution, GoPro says the Floaty “will not support the weight of the suction cup mount,” and that the suction cups — one of many available mounts from the company, and one surfers sometimes use — is not recommended for high-impact water sports. There are some custom cup mounts designed to help the floaty bring your gopro back to the surface.

And for the surfers among us, there is a full featured kit just for us!

floaty on surfboard

Here is a nice video test done to verify which accessories fit best to the floaty:

last tip: the floaty also reduced the angle you can swing your Gopro. and if you drop the Gopro with the floaty into the water from maybe 3-4 feet up it will take a minute for it to get to the surface.

The GoPro’s simplistic design and high quality photographic results have made the GoPro Hero3+ the action camera of choice for many extreme sports enthusiasts. It boasts one-click button operation and an ultra wide-angle lens that together make it easy to capture the action.

But what really sets it apart from its rivals is the huge array of mounts that enable your GoPro to go with you anywhere… Keep reading as we take a look at some of the top GoPro accessories available.

1. DJI Phantom

Phantom

The Phantom quadcopter ($500) is a lightweight craft with a GoPro mount on its underbelly that cuts out the need to jump from a plane to get impressive aerial footage. Controlled remotely, the quadcopter takes a bit of practice to fly well, but the sophisticated technology at its heart helps to produce stable flight, whoever is at the controls, including beginners.

It even features a clever position-hold feature that utilises the built-in GPS and autopilot to suspend the craft in a seemingly stationary fashion in the air. Couple this with the GoPro wireless app and you can monitor what you’re going to film, at least for as long as the connection between camera and iPad holds out.

Don’t forget to use the right attachement accessories!

2. Fat Gecko Kaboom

Fat Gecko Kaboom

Essentially the Kaboom ($80) is a pole that can be either handheld or attached by a couple of sticky pads to a bike helmet (for example), enabling new and interesting shooting angles.

Constructed from five separate ultra lightweight carbon fibre sections, its length can be adjusted from 50.8cm up to 152.4cm, with a grip at one end and standard quarter-inch thread at the other. Everything else you need to attach your GoPro to the boom is also included.

Using just two of the sections and the sticky pads to attach to a full-face bike helmet, we found the additional weight is noticeable at first, but quickly forgotten, and it produces an excellent angle of view.

3. K-edge Go Big Pro

Go Big Pro

This mount is beautifully designed and enables you to mount your GoPro directly to your bike’s handle bar. Consisting of two pieces of machined metal that are secured in place by two Allen key bolts, the grip provided by these bolts holds the GoPro firmly with no chance of movement.

While there are plenty of bar mounts out there, including one from GoPro themselves, the K-Edge’s Go Big Pro ($50) has been exceptionally well thought through. It doesn’t just hold the camera on the bar, it also provides a short reach away from the bar so the camera is clear from the cables.

4. Jaws flex clamp

Jaws flex clamp

This flexible mount enables you to attach a GoPro quickly and easily to almost anything you can clamp. What sets the Jaws ($36) apart is that it clamps without the need for the usual bolts and sticky pads used with other mounts. Both the grip and flexible neck have a decent amount of resistance, so while they require a bit of strength to use, once attached or moved in to position they hold firm.

The clamp itself has a reach of between 0.6cm and 5cm so is easily attached to all manor of equipment, especially anything that is of an odd shape or another mount has yet to be designed. The flexible neck also makes positioning easy, making this one of the most versatile mounts available.

5. GoPro suction cup

GoPro Suction Cup

This compact suction cup enables you to attach your GoPro to a car, window, boat or anything that the sucker will clamp to. The simple plastic design works well, with the suction mechanism providing a powerful grasp onto almost any smooth surface. A central button and lever clamp down to provide the suction – a small tug of the tag on the rubber sucker and the cup releases.

The suction pad holds well and does its job. At this price ($ 41), the added flexibility it offers when mounting to smooth surfaces makes it an excellent accessory.
